Curriculum

The overarching aim for English in the national curriculum is to promote high standards of language and literacy by equipping pupils with a strong command of the spoken and written word, and to develop their love of literature through widespread reading for enjoyment.

The national curriculum for English aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • read easily, fluently and with good understanding
  • develop the habit of reading widely and often, for both pleasure and information
  • acquire a wide vocabulary, an understanding of grammar and knowledge of linguistic conventions for reading, writing and spoken language
  • appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage
  • write clearly, accurately and coherently, adapting their language and style in and for a range of contexts, purposes and audiences
  • use discussion in order to learn; they should be able to elaborate and explain clearly their understanding and ideas
  • are competent in the arts of speaking and listening, making formal presentations, demonstrating to others and participating in debate.

In addition to the NC aims, our English curriculum contributes to our overall curriculum aims to support children to: Foster a positive and caring attitude to others, become effective learners, are prepared with the skills, knowledge and understanding for the next stage in their school life and feel secure and live a healthy and safe life.

The golden thread running through the English curriculum from Nursery to Year 6 is to: read broadly and write for a purpose.

English skills are taught from high quality texts, saturated in humanities knowledge, diverse environments & historical time periods with a growing representation of positive BAME role models and archaic texts. Well loved texts from Beowulf to Cinderella, Odysseus to Traction Man are taught! Reading and writing are therefore embedded within the broader curriculum as they should be.

Reading, phonics, spelling and handwriting are taught with some stand-alone sessions in addition to being integrated into the overall English units of work.  Our love of reading is promoted through teacher reading time, whole class reading lessons, high quality/well cared for book corners, themed days, competitions, drama workshops and our enjoyment of the library in-school & within our community at Bottisham Village College.

Library Times
Each class has a timetabled slot when they visit the library. We use a system called Junior Librarian where we record books as they are borrowed and returned. These books are regularly reviewed and updated thanks to the incredible work of the PTA and some generous donations. Children are invited to scan out one library book to enjoy in school or at home over a 2 week period. These books are the child’s choice and very much for reading for pleasure.  Mrs Walker leads the library with a team of fantastic librarians from Year 6 who can be found on a Thursday lunchtime looking after our library.
